Abstract:

Basic physical principles, underlying remote sensing of precipitation by weather radars, will be reviewed.
A simple discussion of electromagnetic scattering of radar waves by raindrops will be given. I will then examine the role of drop size in quantifying rain amounts via radar echoes.
