Where Do RSI Funds Go? 2004-2005

Below is a list of some of the accomplishments of RSI funding:

RSI Seminar Series
We maintain a popular seminar series, with a combination of internal faculty and students, as well as scientists from across the country. This course also serves as a 1-credit seminar for students interested in remote sensing, which includes students from across the MTU campus. This year we added a "Speaker's Pizza Lunch" which was particularly popular with graduate students.

This year's overall seminar themes were "Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere" (Fall) and "Remote Sensing of the Earth's Surface" (Spring). Speakers were targeted for these themes by the seminar coordinators in the Fall (Bill Rose) and Spring (Gregg Bluth). Here are the list of speakers, 2004-2005:

Fall, 2004

Dr. Buddy Wylie, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. Mike Ramsey, University of Pittsburgh
Dr. Ellen Thomas, Wesleyan University
Dr. James Zimbelman, National Air & Space Museum
Dr. Alan Whittington, University of Missouri
Dr. Jim Wood, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. James Wood, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. Jason Phipps Morgan, Cornell University
Adam Durant, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. Bob Morse, University of Wisconsin, Madison
Dr. Robert Nemiroff, Physics, MTU
Dr. Brian Fick, Physics, MTU
Dr. Jaroslav Kadlec, Institute of Geology, Czech Academy of Science

Spring, 2005

Sarah Volkman, Civil and Environmental Engineering, MTU
Dr. James Wood, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. Jeff Johnson, University of New Hampshire
Stephanie Stockman, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
Dr. Simon Carn, University of Maryland Baltimore County
Dr. Costanza Bonadonna, University of South Florida
Dr. Vincent Realmuto, Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Jeremy Shannon, Geological Engineering and Sciences, MTU
Dr. Keith Golden, NASA Ames
Dr. Graham Ryan, Montserrat Volcano Observatory
Dr. Dennis Geist, University of Idaho

Computing Resources
RSI helps maintain an 8-seat Sun computer laboratory in 211 Dow building, as well as contributing to software licensing and systems support. The computers in this lab are accessible by all RSI members, either directly or indirectly. If you have questions on remotely logging in, just send a message to rsimaint@mtu.edu. The usefulness of the lab should greatly increase this year, because part of our computing support budget went towards the purchase of 8 Dell dual-boot (PC/Linux) machines for the lab, which will be installed during this summer.

Student Support

  • A partial assistantship for the summer term for Susan Hemme (S. Green, advisor), for research on metallotheionein proteins found in Torch Lake and local waterways.
  • Travel support for Lizzette Rodriguez (M. Watson), Taryn Lopez (M. Watson), and Marika Dalton (G. Bluth) to attend and present research at a volcanic gas measurement workshop in Palermo, Sicily, and field work at Campo Flegrei and Vulcano and Etna volcanoes. Photos
  • Travel support for Robert Owen and Maria Val Martin (R. Honrath) to attend present research at the 2005 European Geophysical Union General Assembly in Vienna, Austria.

    Research/Faculty Support

  • proposal cost-share, equipment, for R. Wursirka for LaSER research (C. Kerfoot).
  • graduate class, "Applied Boundary Layer Meteorology", teaching support for research scientist Jan Kleissel (R. Honrath, J. Perlinger).
